There are basically two types of dental implants, endosteal and subperiosteal. Endosteal implants are placed in the jaw bone using a screw or post created out of titanium. The post is very strong and becomes stronger as the jaw bone grows around the screw. The new tooth or crown is attached to the post and is color matched to the surrounding teeth, creating the perfect smile. Some people cannot tolerate an endosteal implant due to the structure of the jaw bone. In this case, a subperiosteal implant is used. Subperiosteal implants actually rest on top of the jaw bone over a metal platform that holds the post in place.
