Porcelain onlays are small porcelain pieces formed to the shape of the missing surface of a tooth. When tooth decay or damage occurs on the surface of the tooth, it is often necessary to remove the bad portion of the tooth to prevent further damage. This leaves an uneven, unprotected area on the tooth. Porcelain onlays are used as replacement to the portion of the tooth that was removed. They are bonded to the tooth with strong adhesive and then textured to match the surrounding teeth. Porcelain onlays allow you to have a even bite on teeth that would otherwise be too shallow to meet the opposing teeth in your mouth. As with porcelain inlays and dental bonding, porcelain onlays are color matched to the surrounding teeth.
