Lincoln Cosmetic Dentistry - Cosmetic Teeth WhiteningWhat is cosmetic teeth whitening? It is a process performed by a cosmetic dentist, using a bleaching agent such as peroxide whitening gel, to remove stains, and create a bright beautiful smile. Cosmetic teeth whitening can be performed at home over an extended period of time, but your dentist can brighten your smile with stronger, more efficient methods that are less messy and less prone to mistakes which can leave your teeth unevenly whitened. Teeth Whitening or Porcelain Onlays and VeneersThe teeth whiting process, unlike veneers and porcelain onlays, does not actually alter the structure of your teeth. It bleaches them, leaving a consistent, bright and clean look. So if you are happy with the smile you have, but would like to brighten it up a bit, then teeth whitening is the answer. On the other hand, if there a flaws in the surface of your teeth or there are slight misalignments, porcelain onlays and veneers would be used and then the rest of your teeth would be whitened to match them. How does Teeth Whitening Work? When you visit our office to have your teeth whitened, we will first clean your teeth. This provides a surface free of anything that would create an uneven bleaching. Once your teeth are cleaned, we take a look at each tooth and create a sample of colors from which to choose. What many people don't realize is not all teeth always need to be whitened. We can often take the color of one of your brighter teeth and use that color to match the rest of your teeth. Regardless of the color and which teeth will be treated, the next step is to isolate only those teeth that will be bleached from those that will be color matched. The teeth bleaching solution is then applied, and and activation method such as a light or dental laser is used to begin the bleaching. After the bleach has been activated, the bleaching is complete and you are free to enjoy your new brighter smile. Can there be complications to teeth whitening? All medical procedures involve the possibility of complications. The most common complication related to teeth whitening is sensitivity to hot and cold. When this type of complication arises, the dentist will apply a protective fluoride treatment which helps with the sensitivity.
